The Hare With Many Friends

The Hare With Many Friends

The Hare was highly esteemed by the other animals in the jungle, all of whom claimed to be her friends. One day, upon hearing the hounds approaching, she sought refuge from them with the assistance of her friends. Her first approach was to the horse, requesting him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. However, the horse declined, citing important tasks for his master and expressing confidence that her other friends would come to her aid.

Next, she approached the bull with the hope that he would fend off the hounds with his horns. Regrettably, the bull expressed his sorrow, mentioning an appointment with a lady but suggesting that their mutual friend, the goat, might be able to assist her. The goat, on the other hand, hesitated due to concerns about the potential harm his back might cause her. He thought it more suitable to approach the ram.

Turning to the ram, she explained her predicament, but the ram postponed any involvement, stating that he didn’t wish to interfere at that moment, as hounds were known to prey on sheep as well as hares. As a last resort, she appealed to the calf, who expressed his inability to help, fearing the responsibility, as many older individuals had already declined the task.

As the hounds drew near, the Hare fled in haste and, fortunately, managed to escape.
